Position Summary: The Substation Engineer is responsible for the design oversight, construction, and maintenance of electrical substations that facilitate the transmission and distribution of electricity across power grids. This role bridges complex electrical theory with practical field engineering to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of substations customers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Substation Design: Assist with developing physical layouts, including plan and profile drawings, grounding plans, and equipment arrangement for substation systems up to 345Kv.
  • System Protection Control (PC): Assist with designing protective relaying schemes, one-line/three-line diagrams, and SCADA communication systems to prevent equipment damage and to ensure proper coordination with utility off takers and customers.
  • Engineering Calculations: Review and performing critical analysis for ground grid sizing, lightning protection, DC/AC station service loading, and conduit fill. Review technical drawings and equipment specifications for conformance with owner requirements and standards.
  • Project Coordination: Managing project lifecycles from conceptual design through construction, including material procurement and vendor drawing reviews.
  • Field Support: Conducting site visits for equipment inspections, troubleshooting urgent issues, and providing technical support during commissioning and startup. Travel to job sites vary based on project schedule and owner requirements.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required. Advanced degrees are preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-15 years of experience as it relates to engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of substations.
  • Professional Licensure: strongly prefer a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Technical Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD and MicroStation is essential for drafting, alongside power system analysis tools like ASPEN or ETAP.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of industry standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, and NEMA.
  • Ability to travel when required. Travel is assumed to be less than 50%
