Mobile Equipment Operator

The LA DOTD is a diverse organization with approximately 4,000 employees state-wide. The incumbent will operate a 320hp, 64,000gvw, flatbed, two axle striping truck on straight and curved roadway sections for appropriate lines on highways. Duties include operating the trucks control box, loading paint, water, beads, in storage tanks, and operating a forklift. This incumbent reports directly to a Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs.

Minimum Qualifications: No experience or training is required.

Job Duties:

  • Operating heavy mobile equipment such as bulldozers, graders, loaders, and other machinery for road construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Performing routine inspections and minor maintenance on equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Assisting in highway and bridge maintenance tasks, including clearing debris, grading surfaces, and transporting materials.
  • Following safety protocols and DOTD operational guidelines during equipment use.
  • Working under the direction of a Highway Foreman and possibly assisting in training or guiding less experienced operators.

Position-Specific Details:

  • Appointment Type: Probational
  • Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, 2 or 1/Heavy depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
  • Work Schedule: Work hours are to be determined, Monday - Friday.
  • Compensation: MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1 Valid Louisiana driver's license will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hourly with an additional $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status. MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hourly with an additional $1.00 for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status. MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY- Class A, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1/HEAVY is $21.05/hourly.

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:

  • Class A CDL license is required within 12 months of employment.
  • Drug test is required.
  • Will need working knowledge of light computer work.
  • May require work involving night time operations or call outs for emergencies that occur outside of normal work hours.
  • Lifting: a maximum of 50 pounds may be required, due to servicing equipment.
